At Lyttelton Lights, our candles are made from 100% natural soy wax. It was discovered in the very early 1990s and is the first wax innovation in the candle industry in over a century! We believe soy wax has so many obvious benefits over traditional paraffin wax candles, we hope it will become the industry standard one day. So why choose a soy wax candle over paraffin wax?
Soy is natural
Soy wax comes from soybeans making it 100% a vegetable product and natural. Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum.
Soy wax burns longer
Soy wax candles are more cost-effective in the long run even if they do tend to be more expensive than those made of paraffin wax. You get your money’s worth from a soy candle as it burns more evenly, leaving almost no excess wax on the sides of the jar.
Soy candles burn cleaner
If you’ve ever noticed a black soot residue on a candle or even a black smoke coming off one that is burning, this is because it is a paraffin candle and that soot is what is left over from incomplete combustion of the paraffin. It can stain your walls and soft furnishings if you burn a lot of candles, but even worse, as the soot particles are very small, they can potentially irritate the lungs. Homes with asthma and allergy sufferers should opt for soy wax candles as they burn much cleaner, leaving virtually no soot or residue.
Soy candles are non-toxic
Soy candles have a lower melting point because they are made of vegetable oil. This means the wax itself doesn’t get too hot and produce soot or toxins into the air. In fact, to date, burning soy wax releases no known carcinogens into the air. Paraffin candles, on the other hand, have several cancer-causing agents, almost all of which have been labeled "toxic air agents" by various environmental agencies.
Soy wax is easier to clean up
If you accidently spill soy wax it’s much simpler to clean up than a paraffin wax candle, just use soap and warm water.
Soy wax is sustainable
The rise in popularity of soy wax candles has seen a new market open up for farmers.
Soy wax candles smell better
The lower melting point of soy wax means there’s a larger amount of the liquid wax around the wick, evaporating lovely essential oils into the atmosphere around you.
