Think outside the gift box: creative Mother's Day ideas

The age-old conundrum: What gifts possibly exist to show enough gratitude to the amazing mother figures in our lives?

Stuck between, “But she has everything” and, “Is this enough to show how much I love and appreciate her” - it can be a minefield out there.

So, we have put together this list of creative Mother’s Day ideas to help you think outside the gift box.

Parental pampering

One thing mums are terrific at is looking after everyone else, so it’s a no-brainer to treat them to some looking after of their own.

Whether it’s a facial, massage, manicure or the whole pamper shebang - this treat will leave your mother figure of choice feeling refreshed, relaxed and, most importantly, appreciated.

We’ll even let you in on a little secret: We always like to browse GrabOne, TreatMe, Groupon and Flossie for discounts and deals so we can get even more pamper for our pennies.

Oh, and another secret: Why not make your own pamper pack for mum to enjoy? Think face mask, bath salts, some beautiful body oil and a Bergamot and Lime scented candle.

Yummy eats and scenic retreats

Or, what about spending the day with your mum - and as many members of your family as you can gather - enjoying delicious fare?

Whether it’s breakfast, brunch, lunch, high tea, dinner or dessert - dressing up and heading out to a favourite cafe, restaurant or bar is always a special treat.

If the outdoors is your mum’s jam - pack some scones and a bottle of bubbles for a scenic picnic. Choose a day-long hike, short walk or even somewhere you can drive right to like your local botanic gardens or scenic reserve

But, better yet, you don’t even have to venture far from home at all. Why not set up a picnic or high tea in the garden (or inside if it’s raining). Perfect for the whole family, from the littlies and furries - right up to grandma and grandad. Just make sure you bring lots of cushions and blankets so you can snuggle up for maximum quality time.

Some time off

It’s tricky business being a mum, especially if you’re a new mum or have young kids dependent on constant care and attention.

If there is a busy lady in your life - whether it’s a friend, partner, or colleague - consider offering to babysit for a day, night or weekend so they can do the things they enjoy, sans children.

Or, if it is some alone time at home they crave - why not turn up with a hamper of goodies (wine, chocolate, and a Sweet Pea and Jasmine scented candle), take the kids to the park or a movie and let her sweet, sweet relaxation begin.

...Or some time away

Even better still, treat them to a holiday. It could be a night (or two) at your own or a friends’ holiday house, an Airbnb, or something more glamorous like flights and a hotel in a foreign city.

Air New Zealand’s mystery breaks are a fun idea, so too is Skyscanner’s Take Me Anywhere function - where you enter your departure city and your dates, and it aggregates all available options for your interests and budget.

Whatever you decide, we hope you have a lovely day celebrating your mum - and remember, mums should be celebrated every day.
