Make your home cosy, ready for winter

More than other seasons, winter is the time for turning our homes into cosy retreats that we want to spend the typically cold and wet days inside.

We can’t help but browse studios, makers and style muses for inspiration which we can then adapt for our own homes, personal tastes and budgets.

This winter, we are taking a step outside the monochromatic Nordic trends of recent times and introducing some rich colours and plush textures into out interior aesthetics.

Our Pinterest boards are brimming with warming terracotta tones; rich and moody navies; cosy chairs and snuggly rugs - and we thought we’d share a few of our favourites with you.

Terracotta and brass tones

Metallic pieces have been making their way into decor schemes for a few seasons now, and this is a trend we think will stay around for a few more.

Golds and brasses add pops of luxury to any room with accents in furniture, design and ornamentals.

From gilded mirrors to furniture edging, ornamental trays and frames to cushion covers, throw rugs and artwork - we love hints of gold and brass gleaming in our rooms.

Now, as colour palettes deepen from popular Scandi tones of seasons past, we are seeing the metallics take on new tones in terracotta - the perfect warming winter hue.

Easily added into existing colour schemes as bed linen, we are loving terracotta looks throughout the home.

Consider adding terracotta coloured cushions and throw rugs to your living areas, with gold or brass bowls, trays and wick trimmers nearby. Golds and brasses also look divine with oiled woods - perfect for layering your Lyttelton Lights candles on side and coffee tables.

Cosy chairs

In plush textures and endless colours or patterns, occasional chairs are an easy and functional way to introduce newness into your interior decor.

At Lyttelton Lights, we are loving soft pinks and plush velvets. These styles and colours tie in nicely with whites, natural woods adding depth and luxe from the living room to bedroom.

If you are not sold on investing in such a statement piece, we have seen a lot of beautiful knitted throws and cushions which can add the same air of opulence.

Or, if you want to think even further outside the box why not add something fun to your home like this translucent swing seat? Adorned with fur, we can’t think of a better nook to snuggle up and watch winter pass by from.

This photo was taken at our last Lyttelton Lights photoshoot at the beautiful Seascape Annandale, located in Pigeon Bay, New Zealand.

Snuggly throws

Reading, movie-watching or sneaking a wee nap - snuggly throws are the ultimate accessory to every room.

Functional for obvious winter-related reasons, these items add important aesthetic touches to create cosy, welcoming and homely atmospheres.

Doubling as perfect gifts, good throw rugs and blankets will stay in families for generations.

Moody navies

The addition of deeper colour schemes to our favourite homes is something we have been observing for the last few seasons.

We are especially taken with the emergence of navy in the form of dark moody feature walls and lush velvet furnishings.

Pairing perfectly with the metallic trend, we are also seeing bold burgundies and emerald greens being introduced on walls as well as in scatter cushions, throw rugs and floor rugs.
